Ilot Mato from Tahina

Ilot Mato from Tahina

We finally left the marina yesterday! It was a beautiful sunny day and, after paying the huge marina bill, it was great to finally get Tahina back out into new waters. We decided to head for a little island half way to the Iles des Pins called Îlot Mato. It was just the right distance for us since we didn’t leave until almost noon. We arrived with just enough light to see the reefs as we negotiated a narrow channel into a lagoon next to Mato. What a beautiful place!

We were joined by our friends on s/v Callisto and s/v Kilkea II on this trip. We all enjoyed some sun-downers and snacks over on Callisto and watched the beautiful colors of the sunset followed by the appearance of starry skies.

The only thing marring the day was the continued ache in my back. This is the second day since I managed to strain the back while changing out our batteries. Hopefully a bit of rest today on the boat will do the back some good.

Commiserations for your back. Get well soon. I thought one of the benefits of lithium ion batteries was that your back wouldn’t be so stressed. Or was that taking your old ones out??

Hi Steve, it was probably a combination of old and new. The the best way to bundle our new bank was to combine the cells into a single block. Its also packed with two thick stainless steel plates on either side banding the cells together so they can’t warp. It’s amazingly small for its power (600 Amp hours), but the whole thing weighs almost 70 kg. There were just two of us trying to get it to go into our compartment without ripping big holes into our salon seats. That’s probably when I did the damage to the back. Should have been exercising more regularly beforehand.

Please rest your back, go to the Dr. if you need to. Once your back is injured, you may have problems forever. Please take good care of yourself and Karen. Miss you both very much.

We were at the Grand Ole Opry and Gen Jackson Steamboat last week. They were just great. Our dinner partners on the Gen Jackson were a lovely couple and their 11 year old daughter from Australia!!! He travels here often to buy old cars and boats and motorcycles and ships them over there to make money. They were on vacation here for a month. The guy never wanted to get married, but he proposed at the Grand Canyon..how exciting! We are having fun here too.
