Non-Cruising Mode

Sunset Nouméa

Sunset Nouméa

We have been in Nouméa for a few days now. We came here planning to just get some provisions and make sure we could get a marina slip by the end of the week. Then we planned to go back out and cruise some more. But, it turns out we didn’t have a slip confirmed, and this is peak season. Now we have to stand ready for the next available slip, so we can’t leave.

The good news is that we have good Internet here at the anchorage off Nouméa, and we have access to grocery stores, restaurants, and other conveniences as well. We spent one day going to another museum. And, we have been able to meet up with more crews of boats we know who have been arriving in New Caledonia before heading to Australia or back to New Zealand. For example, yesterday we met up with our friends on s/v Boree, who had just arrived from Vanuatu.

The weather has been very nice, and as you can see from the photo above, we have been treated to some nice sunsets as well. And, I plan to upload the photos from the hike I did the other day with some local cruisers we’ve met here in New Caledonia.

The reason we need a marina slip is that this weekend Karen and I are flying to Rome, Italy. I was invited to give a talk at a Google Earth event there, and Karen is coming along. Unfortunately, we can only stay for a week, because we need to get back to prepare for our passage to Australia. But, we are really looking forward to going to Italy!

Oh! If you haven’t been, I’m sure you will love Rome! I can’t decide if Trevi Fountain at night or if Michelangelo’s Pieta was my favorite. No. No, it was the gelato! Eat lots!
